What is the WFT?
What is the WFT? The WFT is the Wethersfield Federation of teachers which is a section of AFT (American Federation of Teachers) Connecticut and of the federal affiliates AFT. This also makes a member of the CT AFL-CIO, and their federal counterpart AFL-CIO (American Federation of Labor- Congress of Industrial Organizations)
What this means for you is that if you are a member in good standing (A member signed up for dues deduction) that you are entitled to the protections and support from the WFT & AFT-CT. This support mainly focuses on contract negotiation, grievances and arbitration, informational (Open) meetings about new and ongoing issues between the district and educators, and more. This support also leads to real changes in the classroom and the district at-large. We are also there to support you when administration and administrators may be conducting disciplinary meetings or meetings that feel disciplinary in matter. We serve as advisors, as well as witnesses, during these meetings. The administration is supposed to allow us time to meet with the union member prior to the meeting. We also should be informed by administration what the meeting pertains to prior to the meeting being convened.
